Pan American Qualification (3 Nations)

Pan American Championships (18-24 June, 2012, Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Note: The Pan American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) had been using a two tier process for WC Qualification.  A “First Division” Championship had been scheduled for the Dominican Republic in November 2011.  This tournament would have been composed of all PATHF nations, except the top 6 from the 2010 “Elite Championship”.  The top 2 teams from the First Division Championship would then have qualified for the Elite Championships.  At the 2011 Pan American Games, however, a decision was made to change the qualification process to a single event hosted by the winner of the PANAM Games.  Reportedly there were issues with the size and format of the tournament and in particular, how it would be determined which nations would participate.  PATHF eventually identified 10 nations to participate in May, 2012.  The top 6 nations from the previous championship were joined by the Dominican Republic, USA, Mexico and Venezuela.  It has not been officially reported as to why these nations were selected, but apparently they were the only nations that had requested to participate.  Note: The Dominican Republic later withdrew, reportedly due to financial issues.)

Composition of PATHF nations using previous formats:
Top 6 from 2010 Elite Championship:  Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Uruguay and Greenland)
7th and 8th place teams from 2010 Elite Championship: Canada, Dominican Republic)
