Big surprise of the evening was Poland beating Denmark in Denmark. The Polish Backcourt players were very effective from 9 Meters and they were able to keep the Danish fast breaks to a minimum. The Czech Republic played France even in the first half, 15-15, but could not withstand a French onslaught in the 2nd half. Barring another Ivry upset, France will play Tunisia in the Challenge Marrane final on Sunday.

WC 2007 Preparation Match Results (4 January)

France – Qatar (32-28)
Ivry – Ukraine (27-25)
Spain – Norway (39-25)

An uninspired French side held off a pesky Qatari team that never let the game get out of hand. Although the outcome was never in real doubt, the 4 goal margin of victory is clearly a morale victory for a Qatari team which lost 4 games by much larger margins in a recent International tournament in Italy against far weaker teams. France rested many of their top players, but still had an overwhelming advantage in terms of talent.

Ukraine, arguably the weakest European side to make the World Championships had an embarrassing loss to Ivry, the French club team that is hosting the tournament. While Ivry is one of the top clubs in France, they are missing two of their best players, Luc Abalo, who’s playing with the French National Team and Ragnar Oskarrson, who is training with the Iceland National Team.

Spain walloped Norway, 39-25, in another tune-up match. Spanish News Write-up: http://es.sports.yahoo.com/04012007/2/balonmano-amistoso-cronica-espana-noruega-39-25.html

We’ll continue to post the results of all the matches in our links page on the right hand side of the screen. If you are aware of any matches not listed, feel free to drop us a line at editors@teamhandballnes.com

2007 Women's World Championship Website Launched

The Official Website for the 2007 Women's World Championship has been launched.
http://www.handball2007.fr/cm/

The English portion of the site is still in development. One interesting piece of news that I learned is that the African and Asian qualifying nations have already been determined: http://www.handball2007.fr/cm/spip.php?article26

IHF Website Updates Competition Archive

The IHF website has updated the competition archive at their website to include results and some statistics. If you look at World Championships sections you can see how some nations that didn’t fare as well in the past (Danish Women, French Men) have improved over the years.

Women: http://www.ihf.info/front_content.php?idart=443
Men: http://www.ihf.info/front_content.php?idart=440

One interesting tidbit that I learned was that American Steve Goss was the 4th leading scorer at the 1985 B World Championships in Norway. Steve is one of the few Americans to ever play professionally overseas and I would expect that a performance like this helped make that happen.
