PANAM Games Qualifier Results (Canadian Men Qualify)

Canada 20 – USA 16

Team Canada won the 3rd and deciding match of the best of 3 series Sunday afternoon and has now directly qualified for the PANAM Games this summer in Brazil. Trailing 10-8 at halftime the Canadians opened the 2nd half with 4 unanswered goals to take the lead. Team USA apparently struggled in the 2nd half as they only scored 6 goals and could not respond to the Canadian comeback. The USA Men still have a chance to qualify for the PANAM Games, but will need to win the 2nd chance qualification tournament in Chile later this year.

PANAM Games Qualifier Results (Canadian Women Qualify, USA Men Force Game 3)

Saturday, 6 January 2007
Men: Canada 21 – USA 25
Women: Canada 25 – USA 16

Saturday night’s games in Montreal saw a split between the USA and Canada. The Canadian Women easily defeated their USA counterparts and secured a direct qualification for this summer’s PANAM Games in Brazil. The USA Women must now hope to qualify in the 2nd chance tournament to be played later this year in Mexico.

The USA Men avenged last Thursday’s 1 goal loss in Lake Placid with a convincing 4 goal victory. The USA led throughout the match and at one time pushed the lead to 6 goals. Sebastien Fyfe, who led the Canadians with 6 goals, indicated that Team Canada wasn’t aggressive enough on defense and that 15 goals in one half was simply too much. With the series tied at 1-1, Game 3 this afternoon will decide who gets the direct bid and who will have to travel to Chile.

Big surprise of the evening was Poland beating Denmark in Denmark. The Polish Backcourt players were very effective from 9 Meters and they were able to keep the Danish fast breaks to a minimum. The Czech Republic played France even in the first half, 15-15, but could not withstand a French onslaught in the 2nd half. Barring another Ivry upset, France will play Tunisia in the Challenge Marrane final on Sunday.

WC 2007 Preparation Match Results (4 January)

France – Qatar (32-28)
Ivry – Ukraine (27-25)
Spain – Norway (39-25)

An uninspired French side held off a pesky Qatari team that never let the game get out of hand. Although the outcome was never in real doubt, the 4 goal margin of victory is clearly a morale victory for a Qatari team which lost 4 games by much larger margins in a recent International tournament in Italy against far weaker teams. France rested many of their top players, but still had an overwhelming advantage in terms of talent.

Ukraine, arguably the weakest European side to make the World Championships had an embarrassing loss to Ivry, the French club team that is hosting the tournament. While Ivry is one of the top clubs in France, they are missing two of their best players, Luc Abalo, who’s playing with the French National Team and Ragnar Oskarrson, who is training with the Iceland National Team.

Spain walloped Norway, 39-25, in another tune-up match. Spanish News Write-up: http://es.sports.yahoo.com/04012007/2/balonmano-amistoso-cronica-espana-noruega-39-25.html

American Backcourt Player Signs Contract with Spanish Club

US National Team Left Back Gary Hines has signed a contract with Spanish Club, Tolimar Tres De Mayo. The club is located in Tenerife, the Canary Islands and plays in the in the Division de Honor B or the Spanish 2nd Division, just below the Liga ASOBAL. The club has had some injuries and is currently in last place with a 3-0-12 record. The goal for the second half of the season will certainly be to avoid relegation to the lower division. (15th and 16th place are automatically relegated while 13th and 14th place have a 2 game playoff against the lower division clubs). Gary’s contract starts in January and concludes at the end of the season in May.

Asian Games (Final Results)

Men: Kuwait continued their recent string of Asian Competition victories by defeating the host team Qatar, 27-24 in a pretty physical gold medal match. http://www.doha-2006.com/gis/menuroot/news/article.aspx?id=39464 Iran beat South Korea 31-27 for the bronze. This was Kuwait’s first Asian Games Gold, but they have won the last 3 Asian Handball Championships(2002,2004,2006). The 4 teams that made the semi-finals were also the same top 4 teams at the Asian Championships, earlier this year in Thailand. Of some note, is China placing a disappointing 11th place. With the 2008 Olympics only a year and half away the Chinese are rapidly running out of time if they hope to field a reasonably competitive team in Beijing.

Women: The South Korea women continued their domination of Asia. They have never lost an Asian Games competition and they made their way through this one with an unblemished record. China, however, played them close in the semifinal losing 34-32. The top 4 teams in the standings here also placed in the top 4 at the Asian Championships earlier this year and they will participate in the 2007 World Championships in France next year.
