The handball season is winding down and there’s not much happening mid-week except for the good ol’ French LIDL StarLigue with a key match for a club to avoid relegation.

While living in France from 2002-2007 it was a bit annoying to see Montpellier win everything. But, there were a few club sides that would give them a battle and one of those clubs was U.S. Ivry. And, I’ll never forget the 2006-07 season where Ivry led by a young (just 22) and very talented Right Wing/Right Back named Luc Abalo pipped Montpellier for the title. I pity relative newcomers to the sport that think Abalo is just a pretty good wing. You should have seen him play that season where he scored from everywhere and willed Ivry to a title. Yes, he played quite a bit at backcourt and I’ve never seen an undersized back court player dominate the way he did that season.

Unfortunately, thing have gone downhill for Ivry since they won that title. A proud franchise located in the Paris suburbs, that 2006-2007 title was the last of 8 they’ve won (only Montpellier has won more French titles). Since that high water mark they’ve not contended for a title and they even got relegated to the 2nd division for the 2014-15 season, for the first time since 1957. They immediately popped back up to the 1st division, but it’s been a constant fight to stay there.

They now have 2 make up matches left to play and they need to get 3 points to pass Cesson-Rennes and avoid relegation. First up is the tougher of the two tests, a match against 7th place Toulouse on Wednesday. On Saturday, they have and easier task vs 13th place Creteil. Can they do it? It’s possible. In their last match they upset 6th place Chambery.

It may not be the Champions League Final Four, but for the players involved it’s pretty important and therefore handball worth checking out.

Barcelona is an overwhelming favorite as they have a 4 goal aggregate lead and are an 8.5 goal favorite at home.
Aalborg is a solid favorite since they have a 5 goal aggregate lead and Flensburg is only a 3.5 goal favorite in Flensburg. Additionally, since the first leg in Aalborg was low scoring (26-21) it’s likely that Flensburg will need to win by 6.
Kiel is also favored to hang on to their 2 goal aggregate lead. They won 31-29 in Kiel and Paris is only a 0.5 goal favorite in Paris. It’s debatable as to whether the required Paris margin of victory will be 3 or 2 goals. That will depend on the pace of the game and whether Kiel is on track to score more than 29 goals
Veszprem – Nantes has Veszprem as a slight favorite to advance to the Final Four. Nantes has a 4 goal lead, but Veszprem is favored to win by 4.5 goals. Either 4 or 5 goals will suffice and that will depend on whether Nantes is on track to score 28 goals. - One thing I find interesting about this competition is that is often a good test as to whether the Germany HBL is indeed the best league in the world. Three German sides entered the competition, three German teams remain and are favored to advance to the Final Four. If indeed that happens it’s pretty much impossible to argue against the HBL not being the best league.

The 2020 EHF Women’s Handball European Championships start Thursday and I’ll have my usual preview with streaming links and odds posted soon. But, there’s still plenty of men’s club handball matches to watch this week as well. Here’s a summary of the next 3 days.

EHF European League: IFK Kristianstad (-3.5) vs Tatran Presov (Tuesday, 1845 CET): Link
- Goalkeeper, Rene Ingram, plays for Kristianstad. Ingram subbed in for a penalty shot last week. I say we give him a half vs Tatran Presov to see what he can do.
EHF European League: Fivers vs Leon (-2.5) (Tuesday, 2045 CET): Link
- Circle Runner, Drew Donlin, plays for Leon.
- Leon will look to stay unbeaten vs Austrian side, Fivers. Side note: Several players on the Fivers side will likely be part of the Austrian national team side that will the U.S. on 14 January at the World Championship
Liga Asobal: Puerto Sagunto vs Leon (-4.5) (Thursday, 2010): Video Link
- A busy week for Leon continues. On Saturday they take on Barcelona.
French ProLigue: Dijon (-4.5) vs Angers (Thursday, 2030) Video Link
- Abou Fofana plays for Angers. A draw this past weekend got Angers out of last place. They need more points to edge their way out of the relegations zone

Liga Asobal: Viveros Herol BM. Nava vs Leon (-3.5) (Sunday, 2000 CET): Link
- Circle Runner, Drew Donlin, plays for Leon and has been getting some extended playing time lately on defense. Leon had a huge victory on Thursday over previously unbeaten Irun and will look to continue their winning streak.
