Bernd Wulffen Arrested in South Africa

According to the Sunday World of South Africa, Bernd Wulffen was arrested Friday in Cape Town. Wullfen, who’s pattern of fraud and deceit left a trail of dissatisfied soccer and handball players in the United States and Canada, apparently wore out his welcome in South Africa. Confronted with evidence, by reporter Kgomotso Sethusha, who had earlier written a favorable article on his program, Wulffen reportedly apologized and hinted that he would be leaving the country. Instead of leaving, however, he stayed in country and was lured into a police sting operation. His bail hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Video of Jackson Richardson Retirement

Jackson Richardson, the iconic star of French Handball played his final game as a professional this past weekend. This website has some video related to this last match: http://handballdream.blogspot.com/2008/05/take-care-jackson.html

Richardson's entry suspended from the rafters was a little strange, in my opinion, but I thought that all the players entering in dreadlocks was a nice and comical tribute.

USA Withdraws from Men's Pan American Championships

According to email correspondence obtained by Team Handball News, the USA Men's team will not be participating in the upcoming 2008 Men's Pan American Championships in Brazil. The email correspondence is between US Handball officials and Pan American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) officials and has been confirmed by reliable sources.

The reasons for withdrawal, however, are unclear and Team Handball News is awaiting an official response from the new USA Team Handball Federation.

IHF Backs Greenland for PATHF Membership and Men's Pan American Championships

The IHF has reiterated to the PATHF that Greenland should be reinstated as a full member of the PATHF. The PATHF had requested an appeal of the IHF's earlier decision, but was informed by the IHF that their failure to pay the required administrative fee in a timely manner had exhausted the PATHF's legal options.

The Canary in the Icelandic Coalmine

When ever anyone asks me where is Handball popular in the world, I rattle off several countries in Europe, and I'll usually mention that in Iceland it's their number 1 sport. Based on this article in the Iceland Review http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_news/?cat_id=16539&ew_0_a_id=305455 , however, my standard litany is going to need updating. Yes, shockingly basketball has now clearly outstipped handball in popularity in Iceland.

You'll see a lot of articles on the IHF and EHF websites heralding the ever increasing popularity of the sport, but they often mask the big challenges the sport faces against the baskeball juggernaut of the NBA. The reality is that Handball is in danger of further marginalization if the sport's leaders don't start to get a little more creative with the marketing and promotion of the sport. That's not to say that nothing's being done. Efforts like the EHF's free web broadcasts of the Champions League and the LNH's trip to Miami are to be commended. Much more, however, is needed to turn the tide if they are going to convince Icelandic kids to quit shooting hoops.

Although one could argue that this is actually good news for developing countries like the USA and Great Britain. If countries like Iceland have a shrinking talent pool, then they logically aren't going to be as good anymore and the gap between the haves and have should lessen.

USOC: Dieter Esch Thoroughly Investigated Prior to Certification

Dieter Esch, the leader of the new USA Team Handball Federation, has been a successful business, both in Germany and the United States. This successful business career, however, has not been devoid of controversy and allegations. Team Handball News spoke recently with Mr Esch concerning two allegations which will turn up on different internet pages if you do a simple Google Search on “Dieter Esch.”

The first allegation relates to his “arrest” for defrauding a Saudi Arabian company by not making it clear that his company, IBH was bankrupt. According to Mr. Esch, he did in fact plead guilty in Germany on a charge related to the bankruptcy, but the law was shortly thereafter rescinded and his record has been expunged in Germany.

The second allegation relates to the Wilhelmina Scouting Network (WSN) which was an independent entity separate from Wilhelmina. The WSN apparently charged prospective models questionable fees for their services. According to Mr. Esch, Wilhelmina withdrew their license and was instrumental in putting WSN out of business.

Team Handball News has not independently investigated these allegations, but did contact the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as to whether they had investigated Mr. Esch’s background. Eric Parthen, the USOC director of NGB Organizational noted the following:

“The USOC did conduct a thorough investigation into Mr. Esch's past which included two separate background checks (domestic and international). One was conducted at the USOC's staff direction as part of our initial review and the other was requested by the USOC Board of Directors prior to their approval. Throughout the process, Mr. Esch was completely open and transparent and was more than cooperative in providing any information requested.”

USA Team Handball Summit (Save the Date)

Dieter Esch, the leader of the new USA Team Handball Federation, has informed THN that there will be a Team Handball Summit in St Louis, MO on 13-15 June. The Summit is planned to start in the evening on Friday, 13 June and will wrap up mid-afternoon on Sunday, 15 June. The summit is intended to be an “all-comer”s gathering to discuss the future of Team Handball in the USA and how the new Handball Federation can further develop handball in the USA.

Details of the summit are still being worked and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

Time Shifting the Champions League Final
If you're not going to be able to watch the Champions League Final between Ciudad Real and Kiel live, you should be able to watch it "on demand" at this link:  http://www.ehfcl.com/2007-08/videos

This link will allow you to acess the match with less likelihood of seeing information about the final outcome that might spoil the game for you.  For a couple of days the EHF doesn't even post the score of the match.  But just in case have a sheet of paper handy to block out the score.

Finally, don't forget that in the home and away two game format there is no such thing as "garbage time" in the first game as every goal counts towards the final aggregate.

Back to back to back…
The official paperwork, naming the UTHF the new team handball NGB, was signed, sealed and delivered to President Esch yesterday (Tuesday, April 29). With it, in an instant – pooof, the UTHF has gained the ultimate legitimacy. It was a day of reckoning, the dawn of a new day, in our sick and twisted US team handball universe.

Just two days following the Chicago Inter Team Handball Club's (M) win of the West Point sponsored and soon-to-be-asterixed 2008 Lake Placid National Championship — and only a day removed from what had to be the biggest *positive* headline to have graced the US team handball world in … decades (?!) – Tuesday’s NGB announcement was just that. An announcement. .

In less than 48 hours, the US handball world got some much needed action.  Not sure that the average fan even noticed the back to back to back newsflashes. And even more important was his/hers level of comprehension.  And, NO! — it has nothing to do with the wisdom or IQ (although I do know of one Gilbert Grape hiding in his mother’s basement giggling uncontrollably…) of the average US handball fan.

It’s just that it is not every day that you have major news stories coming from three different pasrts of the US.

And none was more breathtaking than the Paris press conference, announcing the Frenchies were coming to Miami next April! Cristian Zaharia, (Coach Zaharia that is), quietly achieved what no organization (let alone individual) has ever been able to achieve before him. Bringing professional handball – team handball – to the US and A.

It will indeed be interesting to see how will the US team handball community rally behind such a great event.  Some, if not most, will expect the new Federation to DO SOMETHING – anything – to seize this unique opportunity.

Having watched this project develop from the sideline, I can only hope that the US handball community will understand the sheer magnitude of this celebration.   This is not the time for finger pointing.  I wrote on this very topic before. So has John Ryan and Bjorn. We need to let our collective actions speak louder… Once and for all.  No more armchair quarterbacks.

Do you have an idea? Great? Don’t debate it. Just do it! Lead by example. Create, build, open doors, make phone calls, volunteer time and money…  Then, watch and see what it feels like to have others (US handball’s version of bums, leeches and hypocrites) come to you with “advice” and “constructive criticism”.
Miami 2009, represents the opportunity to ask “not what handball has done for us but what have we done for handball?”

Professional Handball in Miami: A big opportunity and a big challenge
When I received an email from a French reader last week informing me that the French Professional League (LNH) Coupe de la Ligue Semifinals and Finals we’re coming to Miami next year, my first reaction was that perhaps somebody was aiming at payback for my April Fools Article  https://teamhandballnews.com/news.php?item.480 . I even looked at the web addresses carefully in the links that were sent to me just to make sure that it wasn’t an elaborate web phishing trick.

Needless to say I’m excited about this happening. It’s not very often that one can make a bold statement like, “Out of 300,000,000 Americans, I’m the most devoted fan of the LNH,” with a high degree of confidence. Maybe there is somebody hiding in Butte, Montana with a lifetime subscription to HandAction magazine who has every match taped and Fedexed to him, but I doubt it. While living 5 years in France I didn’t go to as many games in person as I would have liked to, but I rarely missed an airing on TV. And even though I’ve been back in the States a year, I still follow the league as best as I can now. Really, I can’t wait to cheer against my favorite team http://teamhandball.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html in Miami.

Without question this is a big opportunity for USA Handball and Christian Zaharia and the LNH should be commended for their exemplary vision and willingness to take on this challenge. Hopefully, this match will further energize handball development in Miami and on the US East Coast. At the same time, maybe the LNH’s lead will entice the German HBL, Spanish Liga ASOBAl, and the EHF to take notice and pursue the 300,000,000 strong US market more aggressively, whether it be with similar matches on USA soil or a good TV contract.

The challenge of finding a European handball entity to take a chance on America has been met and that all by itself is a great accomplishment. But the even greater challenge will now be turning this opportunity into an unqualified success. Success will be measured in a lot of ways, but the most visually evident one will be the number of people in their seats. And while there was a lot of optimism expressed at the press conference regarding filling a 20,000 seat arena for two consecutive days of Handball in Miami, I have my doubts.

When the same event was played in Paris 2 years ago, I attended the final match, a captivating overtime game between Paris and Montpellier. Played at Paris Handball’s arena, the Stade de Coubertin, however, only about half of the 4,800 seats were filled. If they had played at Paris Bercy, the closest thing that all of France has to an NBA style arena, it would have been a cavernous emptiness. And I’ve been to games where the French National Team has played at Bercy and while there was a good crowd, there never was a sellout of all 15,000 seats. So if you can’t get a huge crowd in France, logic dictates it will be an even bigger challenge in Miami, where there is a much smaller fan base. A more realistic goal will be to fill the lower sections. Still a challenge, but potentially doable with an aggressive advertising campaign and an assist from the new USA Handball Federation.

And how could the new Federation help? Well, 11-12 April 2009 does coincide with the traditional timing for the USA National Championships. Miami has never hosted a Championship, so it would be logical for it to do so next year. The Federation would also do well, to coordinate the timing of the matches as to not conflict with the LNH games. As I think 2 matches are envisioned for both days, this would probably mean scheduling Nationals over 4 days (Thursday-Sunday) as opposed to the traditional 3 days (Friday-Sunday). Additionally, the Federation could look into playing some matches like the USA Club Championship Finale as warm up matches at the Miami Arena itself. Finally, the Collegiate Nationals have been held in a separate location in recent years. Next year that Championship too should be played in Miami.

If the National Tournaments are in Miami that would immediately add around 500 fans ( maybe more/maybe less). Not placing Nationals in Miami, however, could mean that those same 500 fans would not be there. As clubs plan their trips you could have a situation where a handball fan/player is forced to make a budgetary choice between flying to Nationals (location TBD) or Miami.

Perhaps it’s a little too soon to specify exactly what steps the new Federation should take. It’s a given, however, that they should engage proactively with the Miami organizers.  It’s also a given that any American who calls himself a Handball fan should find their way to Miami next April. I’ll be there in the front row. You won’t be able to miss me wearing my Mladen Bojinovich autographed jersey.
Agence France Presse: Handball Coupe de la Ligue Semis/Final to Miami in 2009

According to Agence France Presse, next year’s semifinals and final of the Ligue National de Handball‘s (LNH) Coupe de la Ligue will be played in Miami 11-12 April at the Miami Arena. The LNH is France’s top league and is arguably the 3rd best professional league in the world after the German Bundesliga and the Spanish Liga ASOBAL.

Details have not been provided yet and the LNH has not officially confirmed this report. It is expected to confirm the story next Monday at a press conference. Handzone.net indicates that former USA National Team Coach and current Miami Sharks coach Cristian Zaharia was involved in the effort to bring the game to Miami and that a budget of $1.5M is envisioned for the matches. Additionally, a select side of French players will possibly play the US National Team.

The Coupe de la Ligue is one of three titles that the top French clubs compete for each year. (The other 2 titles being the regular season championship and the Coupe de France, which includes clubs from all levels in France.) The format has varied from year to year, but last year’s format had the 5 teams playing in European competition receive a bye to the quarterfinals with the remaining 9 teams being split into 3 groups with the winner of each group advancing to the quarterfinals. For the quarterfinals, clubs were randomly drawn to determine match-ups and home court for a knockout game to advance to the semifinals. The semifinals and finals were then played at one location, similarly to what is planned for Miami next year.
